Chemical and Immunological Properties of a Species-specific Carbohydrate of Pneumococci
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pneumococci contain a non-protein constituent which, on the basis of its chemical and immunological properties, appears to be a carbohydrate distinct from the type-specific carbohydrate and common to the species.

Immunological Properties of a Typical (s-producing) and a Degraded (non-s-producing) Strain of Type Ii Pneumococcus with Special Reference to Protective Antibodies
The loss of the specialized function of S production by Type II pneumococcus was accompanied by a loss of the antigenic properties involved in both active and passive protection of mice. Absorption of Type II serum with S-producing pneumococci removed all the protective antibodies, as well as the type-specific agglutinins and S precipitins. The same absorption treatment of the serum by non-S-pr...
متن کاملPRODUCTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF HUMORAL IMMUNE RESPONSE AGAINST MUSTARD GAS
One of the promising aspects of the immunological research on chemical war gas is to investigate the immunogenicity of some hazardous compounds such as mustard gas. Mustard gas is categorized as a "hapten" based on its physical and chemical properties. Haptenic chemicals which do not possess immunogenicity could be immunogenic experimentally when conjugated with a suitable protein carrier...
متن کاملEffect of lichen biological soil crusts on soil properties derived from early Holocene sandy sediments
Introduction: Biological soil crusts are a community of cyanobacteria, fungi, lichens, and mosses and play key roles in arid and semi-arid regions including carbon and nitrogen accumulation, soil fertility, dust capture, soil conservation and stability. Recent studies show that the formation of biological soil crusts on mobile dunes areas is extremely difficult due to low vegetation cover, st...
متن کاملChemo-immunological Studies on Conjugated Carbohydrate-proteins Ii. Immunological Specificity of Synthetic Sugar-protein Antigens
The function of carbohydrates as determinative substances in bacterial specificity is well illustrated in the immunological differentiation of thespecific types of pneumococci and of Friedlander bacilli. Previous studies have demonstrated that the presence of type-specific polysaccharides in these encapsulated organisms determines the antigenic properties of the cell and the serological relatio...

As a result of the work of numerous investigators a striking advance has been made during the past decade in our knowledge of the chemical and immunological properties of that unique class of naturally occurring substances, the specific bacterial polysaccharides. Complex carbohydrates possessing immunologically specific properties have been found widely distributed in many varieties of differen...
